The Watch That Ran Fine — Until It Didn't

The Situation

A client in Petaling Jaya noticed their daily-wear piece was losing its power reserve significantly faster than when they had first bought it. The movement appeared to be running accurately when wound, but would run down after just four hours of wearing — far below the expected reserve.

The Approach

A Watch Health Assessment was conducted first to confirm the winding mechanism as the responsible component. The timegrapher showed accurate timing but confirmed the mainspring was not achieving full tension from daily wear. The Winding Module Service was then recommended — the rotor bearing was found to be significantly worn, reducing winding engagement.

The Outcome

After service and bearing replacement, the watch returned to its expected power reserve from normal wearing. The client's written service record included before-and-after winding efficiency data. Total time from first contact to collection: 11 working days across both services.

The watch was brought to Winding House before purchase was finalised. The assessment found the movement in sound condition with no signs of moisture ingress. A small amount of wear consistent with age was noted. Timegrapher readings were within acceptable range for an unserviced piece of its age. No prior non-professional intervention was detected.

The Outcome

The client proceeded with the purchase, using the written assessment as part of their negotiation — they used the servicing recommendation cost to adjust the final price. The watch was subsequently brought back for a Winding Module Service six months later.

A Wedding Watch, Restored for the Day

The Situation

A client wished to wear her late father's dress watch at her wedding — a piece she had not worn in several years. The movement had been confirmed running by a previous jeweller, but the case had accumulated significant scratching and the crystal was clouded across a quarter of its surface.

The Approach

The Cosmetic Detail Restoration covered crystal replacement, careful case brushing to address scratches on the case flanks, and lug refinishing. The case had a combination of brushed and polished surfaces — the watchmaker matched and preserved the original finishing direction on each surface rather than applying a uniform treatment.

The Outcome
