The Workshop
Behind the Work
A small practice, quietly doing careful things for people who care about their watches.

How Winding House Came to Be
Winding House opened in 2001, in a narrow shophouse off Jalan Tun Razak. The founding idea was simple: Kuala Lumpur had plenty of fast-turnaround repair counters, but very few places where a watch received genuine, unhurried attention — and where the owner left with a written record of what had actually been done.
In the years since, the workshop has grown carefully rather than quickly. We have not tried to handle every possible job. Instead, we've concentrated on three services we can do well consistently — diagnostics, winding mechanism work, and cosmetic restoration — and turned away work that falls outside that focus.
That approach has kept clients returning over many years. A number of the watches we see today were first brought in by their current owners' parents. That kind of continuity tells us something we're glad to hear.
"The watch is not merely a machine. It is a record of time, care, and the hands that tended it."
What We Stand For
Honest Assessment
We tell you what we find, not what justifies the largest bill. If a watch needs only minor work, that's what we'll say.
Documented Work
Every assessment produces a written summary of findings. You have a record of your watch's condition — independent of whether further work proceeds.
Controlled Scope
We work within a defined set of services rather than attempting everything. Focus produces better outcomes than breadth.
Team
The People at the Bench
Rahman Hafiz
Lead Watchmaker
Rahman has been working on mechanical movements since 1997. He handles all complex diagnostics and winding mechanism work, and writes the assessment summaries personally.
Siti Liana
Case Restoration Specialist
Siti joined in 2008 and leads all cosmetic restoration work. Her background in fine metalwork informs an approach that preserves original case geometry rather than reshaping it.
Farid Ismail
Client Services
Farid manages client communication and coordinates workshop scheduling. He ensures that every assessment summary reaches the client with context and clarity.
How We Work
The following protocols guide every watch that passes through Winding House.
Timegrapher Measurement
All movements under assessment are measured using a precision timegrapher across multiple positions. Results are documented in the client summary.
Secure Watch Handling
Each watch is photographed and logged on arrival. Storage is in locked, humidity-controlled conditions while awaiting service or collection.
No Unnecessary Part Replacement
Components are replaced only when their condition requires it. Original parts are retained and cleaned where their condition permits continued use.
Client Data Protection
Personal details collected during enquiries are held confidentially, used only for service coordination, and handled in accordance with Malaysian data protection requirements.
Written Cost Estimates
All recommended work is itemised in writing before it proceeds. No additional work begins without the client's explicit agreement.
Post-Service Performance Check
Watches are re-tested after service work is completed. Final timing data is compared to initial measurements and documented in the handover record.
Mechanical Watchmaking in Kuala Lumpur
Winding House occupies a particular position within Kuala Lumpur's watch repair landscape. Rather than operating as a general service centre handling all brands and all types of work, the workshop concentrates on three well-defined areas: movement diagnostics, self-winding mechanism servicing, and surface restoration.
This focused approach reflects a considered view of what produces consistent results. A watchmaker who works daily within a narrow set of procedures develops a depth of familiarity with those procedures that a generalist, however capable, cannot match. When the same kinds of problems are encountered repeatedly, the quality of the response to them improves over time.
The workshop's location on Jalan Tun Razak places it within central Kuala Lumpur, accessible from Ampang, KLCC, and the surrounding districts. Clients have arrived from as far as Penang and Johor Bahru, typically for the Watch Health Assessment service — partly because the written format of the findings proves useful for insurance documentation and sale valuations.
Winding House does not rush. The turnaround times listed for each service reflect the time genuinely needed to do the work properly, not the minimum possible with shortcuts applied.
